Matthew 5:14-16

The New Testament

Matthew 5:14-16
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Sonnet 733 Matthew 5:14-16

The virtue of humility is great
A deep and solemn duty of the saint
This opposite of pride-fulness and hate
A friend to love and cousin to restraint.

Yet sometimes it's confused with lesser traits
The reticent, the shy, the timid souls
May think they're humble in their fearful states
Denying the great weakness of these roles.

There's hidden selfishness in holding back
In guarding for yourself against the night
In failing to be kind with those who lack
The joys and the blessings of your light.

So gather up your courage and step out
And let your gospel light shine all about.
