Matthew 16:15-19 (#5)

Sonnet 739 Matthew 16:15-19 (#5) The Keys of the Kingdom

The concept and the substance of a key
Is matched or messaged in this simple word
The opposite or foil, plain to see-
Where there's a key, a “lock” must be inferred.

While earthly doors and gates are often locked
And keys required to pass through such a wall
There's something much more seriously blocked
And that's the tree of life beyond the fall.

And sin and death and misery yield up
Their hold, to keys the Master forged in pain
Unlocking as He chose the bitter cup
Each banished child from Adam's ball and chain.

And now the Master locksmith shares these keys
With almost countless priesthood appointees.
