Matthew 5:14-16 (#2)

Sonnet 734 Matthew 5:14-16 (#2)

How many of us bathed in gospel light
Ordained, baptized and blessed by sacred rite
Deny the breadth, the power and the height
By keeping such a blessing out of sight?

And do we realize our common plight
That having now been blessed with heaven's light
And should we then refuse to fight the fight
We thus commit an unforgiving slight?

And how hard can it be in such a night
With truth and beauty shining ever bright
To sing, to talk, to shout, to share, to write
And glorify the Father with our light?

Forever have the holders of this light
Been told to shine it forth with all their might.
