Isaiah 53:3-5

Isaiah 53:3-5
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 ¶Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Sonnet 513 Isaiah 53:3-5

Some words are deep and heavy, wise and strong
With meanings that add feelings to insight
That lift from common prose to lovely song
And generate a special truth and light.

“Grief” and “sorrow”, are such weighty terms
And “sticken”, “smitten” and “afflicted” too
And “bruised” and “wounded”, in a word, confirms
The sacrifice that was atonement’s due.

And for us words of equal weight and strength
As we are offered “peace” by what he did
And added to our peace we’re “healed” at length
Through his “chastisement” in this awful bid.

It’s a good deal for us, by any test
He bears our transgressions and we get blessed.
