Exodus 20:3-17 (#9) Thou shalt not commit adultery

Sonnet 697 Exodus 20:3-17 (#9) Thou shalt not commit adultery

Beyond the common meaning of the word
In Hebrew and by inference in play
Is a commandment needing to be heard
To not pollute your worship any way.

Apostasy is quite the ancient threat
As old and new as sexual designs
Devotion to the Lord must be well set
Adulterated worship undermines.
Thus chasing after gods of stone or gold
Is much the same as faithlessness to wife
As this commandment covers, we are told
The unadulterated view of life.

So if you want full blessings in your house
You must be true to God and to your spouse.
