You may protest that such a bold command
As that to tell you not to fear or doubt
Defies the normal way we understand
That feelings such as these can turn about.
We tend to think we're powerless to change
The course of unbelief or faith or love
That fate or circumstances will arrange
And we the victims more or less thereof.
But if the Lord commands us to believe
And tells us not to fear or faint or doubt
Then clearly that's a thread that we can weave
An outcome in our pow'r to bring about.
And in this verse the pattern is explained
Control your thoughts and faith will be sustained.
